Bilateral meetings
Meetings that involve political leaders and high-level government officials are usually interpreted consecutively with the help of note-taking. At bilateral meetings involving the highest level of state representation, each party generally invites its own interpreter, who interprets the remarks of their state representative into the language of the other party. Interpreters need to have knowledge of the topic under discussion and to understand the roles of the participants involved. They should also have a good overview of the political landscape in both countries and of current world events. Protocol dictates that each party bring its own interpreter for meetings at the highest level.
