Both forms of interpreting are used at press conferences – the chosen form depends on the press conference format. Simultaneous interpreting is used when there is a need to interpret into multiple languages, while press conferences interpreted only into one language can utilise consecutive interpretation. Generally the speaker presents a prepared communiqué and then passes the microphone to the interpreter, who interprets the speaker´s words with the help of notes taken during the presentation. Following this exchange, there are questions from the audience. Press conferences are often recorded.
