Depending on the audience at a press conference, interpreting can be done simultaneously or consecutively. Simultaneous interpreting is most suitable when the audience is multilingual while consecutive interpreting is appropriate when the press conference is interpreted into one language only.

Simultaneous interpreting is recommended for training sessions, as it saves time, allows participants to follow the presented material easily, and facilitates good interaction between a trainer and trainees. Trainees receive information through their headsets with the help of portable interpreting equipment.

Bilateral meetings involving political leaders and high-ranking government officials generally use consecutive interpretation. Protocol dictates that each side bring its own interpreter for bilateral meetings of the highest level.
